Accucraft October news

Unfortunately the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ has brought with it the cold wind of hard economics and, in light of the fall in the value of Sterling, we have had to make some hard choices about the shape and scope of our range. It’s not all bad news though and good progress has been made on the Howard vans, allowing us to bring you coloured 3D CADs of the design which has now advanced to the tooling stage, more stock of Jackson & Sharp coaches is available and we have an almost unlimited supply of draft fans for you ‘alcoholics’!

1:32 scale Black 5

In the aftermath of the fall in the value of Sterling we have taken a long, hard look at some of the projects slated for production. 1:32 scale Black 5; for assorted reasons, which include a necessary re-costing, problems with the engineering sample and a shortage of orders, we have decided to cancel this project in its current form and have asked the factory to look at the design again. This has not been an easy decision and comes at some cost to us but we apologise for any disappointment this might cause.

1:19 scale Baguley Drewry diesels

We also looked at the Baguley Drewry diesel; in this case we had hoped to bring the latest batch to the market at the previous RRP but the shift in currency and increased production costs have left us with no choice but to increase the cost of these locos to a UK RRP of £350.00 and the chassis only to £250.00.  Unfortunately this price rise will be retrospective – please check with your dealer if you have one reserved.

1:19 scale ‘Howard’ Vans

We are delighted to bring you some 3D CAD images from the factory to give a better impression of the final look of these useful vans.

1:20.3 scale Jackson & Sharp coaches and combines

We are pleased to say that the entire range is once again available from Accucraft (US).  These stunning, highly detailed narrow gauge cars are ideal for anyone modelling American 3′ railroads.  The UK RRP is £250.00 per car or £900.00 for a set of four which may include a combine or any mixture of the vehicles.  We will be shipping from California one more time before Christmas so don’t miss out on these over-sized stocking fillers!  Only available in the UK direct from our Herefordshire office.

Draft fan blowers for alcohol-fired locomotives

We understand that there seems to be a national shortage of these invaluable draft fans.  Never fear!  We have good stock of the Accucraft version, just £85.00 from your local retailer or direct from us (batteries not included!)

Accucraft September News

The Llanfair Garden Railway Show was another great success and the Welshpool &  Llanfair Railway pulled out all the stops to match – grateful thanks to the organisers of both events!  The show enabled us to announce the new WD Hunslet and the L&B Howard van.

New for 2018 – WD Hunslet 4-6-0T in 1:19 Scale (16mm:1ft)

Accucraft Trains is pleased to announce this locomotive in 16mm to the 1 foot (1:19) scale live steam. Our thanks and appreciation to both Graham Langer and Ian Pearse for their assistance in the development of this model.  2018 represents the final Great War centenary year and it is fitting that Accucraft (UK), which has supported commemorations such as ‘Tracks to the Trenches’ at Apedale and the North Norfolk Railway’s ‘Tracks & Trenches’ gala, marks the anniversary with an appropriate model.

Hunslet produced 155 of these 2’ (60cm) gauge locos during WW1 for service behind the trenches in France, sharing their duties with Baldwins and Alcos procured for the same role.  After the war they were scattered to the four winds, examples ended up in South America, Australia and Palestine as well as England and Scotland.  In 2005 The War Office Locomotive Society repatriated No. 1215 from Australia and its restoration is nearly complete.  A percentage of the retail profit from each UK sale will be donated to this locomotive, a greater percentage if ordered directly from us at Accucraft (UK) Ltd.

The model is internally gas fired and has slide valve cylinders. The boiler is fitted with a water gauge with blow down valve, lubricator with drain and pressure gauge. It will be available in either 32mm (gauge 0) or 45mm gauge (gauge 1), the latter as per the 3’ gauge locos supplied to Balfour Beatty in Scotland. The model will only be available in satin black (with no running number) and will carry a UK RRP of £1950.00. We expect this locomotive to be popular; please place your reservations early!  They will carry item numbers S19-29A (45mm gauge) and S19-29B (32mm gauge).  You can see the full details here.

New for 2018 – Lynton & Barnstaple Railway ‘Howard’ Bogie Van

These bogie vans were ordered by the Southern Railway to strengthen the fleet it acquired with the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.  The four vans were built by J & F Howard of Bedford in 1927 and featured sliding doors and ‘X’ barcing, the latter changed to diagonal bracing in 1934, just a year before they were withdrawn and scrapped!  In 2002 the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Trust acquired the last remains of one so there remains the slim chance that one may yet be resurrected.

Since the vans only ever carried Southern livery we will be offering them in SR brown and L&B grey (data only).  The UK RRP will be £100.00 each.  We feel that they will make a great generic van, of a type seen all round the world on 2’ gauge networks and are sure they will be very popular in consequence.  You can find full details here.

Lyn steams!

We were delighted to be present for the first steaming of the new-build Lyn for the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway at Alan Keef’s works at Ross-on-Wye.  Accucraft UK helped fund the construction of the locomotive by donating one of our 1:19 scale models of Lyn for the 762 Club to auction.  We look forward to seeing this powerful 2-4-2T in operation on an ever-expanding railway.

Accucraft July News

In the July bulletin we bring you more news of our open day, some further advice about the 7/8ths” Decauvilles, news of our involvement with the North Norfolk Railway’s ‘Tracks & Trenches’ weekend, an update on the delivery of the 7/8ths” Bagnall saddle tanks and absolutely the last call for Tornados.

Open Day at Accucraft (UK)

We will be holding an open house at Unit 4, Long Meadow Industrial Estate on Saturday 5th August.  Ian has just returned from the factory having identified a skip’s worth of factory seconds, damaged items and test samples which will be shipped to the UK.  These items will be offered for sale on a ‘first come, first served’ basis without prior reservation and include ‘open box’ locomotives, rolling stock and track components as well as sundry ‘kits of parts’ with potential for re-assembly!  As they say, “everything must go!”

We can now confirm that we will be supported by Swift Sixteen, Model Earth Design & Talisman Brass Castings, Trenarren Models, Campbell’s Quarry and Neil Ramsay’s collection of Irish 3′ gauge stock.  We will be running Accucraft locomotives in 1:13.7, 1:19, 1:20.3 and 1:32 scales.  Opening times are 10.30am to 16.00pm and there will be an on site café offering refreshments and light lunches.

Some of the stock on its way from the factory for the open day

7/8ths” Decauvilles – gas tank replacement programme

Alas, it seems the fix installed by the factory for the UK batch still hasn’t eliminated the problem of surging gas with these models.  Therefore the factory is sending us replacement tanks which are slightly smaller and can be completely insulated, trials of which have shown that this is the best solution.  The good news is that replacing the gas tank is a straightforward nut and bolt operation which can be effected by anyone with the simplest of tools.  We will be send these tanks out to all of those who have purchased their locomotives through the UK dealer network with a set of illustrated instructions.

North Norfolk Railway ‘Tracks & Trenches’ weekend

Continuing our support of WW1 themed events, we were delighted to help with the NNR’s Great War weekend in June, sponsoring the transportation of an armoured Simplex from the Apedale Railway.  A narrow gauge line had been set up in the goods yard at Holt station and our friends from Apedale had fun shunting the rolling stock on a very compact track plan.  Graham Langer of Accucraft (UK) was present with the Light Cavalry Association, demonstrating the role of the horse in WW1.

The Bagnalls are on their way!

After a long gestation period, the Bagnall saddle tanks will be with dealers in July.  Bagnall were renowned builders of industrial locomotives for both standard gauge and narrow gauge.  They developed a huge range of designs and built numerous engines for the ‘big four’ and the MOD.  The 7″ x 12″ saddle tank was a mid-range narrow gauge design that could be supplied in a number of different formats.  Several examples of the type have been preserved including Woto by Alan Keef, the prototype on which we based our model. You can see the full specification here.

Absolutely the last call for Tornado!

We have been made aware by our colleagues in Union City that the US office has a handful of these lovely Gauge 1 locomotives left.  We can offer these to UK customers for £3650.00 including UK delivery and VAT but they will only be available directly through the Hereford office.  You can see the full specification here.

Versions still available:

S32-12B – lined BR blue, rimmed chimney, early emblem
S32-12C – lined BR green, rimmed chimney, early emblem

Accucraft June News

It’s June and we’re “bustin’ out all over” with stock arrivals and news of an open day / garage sale at the unit in August.  We also bring you an update about the 7/8ths” scale Decauville’s which needs to be read by anyone in the UK who has ordered one through us or our dealers.

Summer Bonanza!

In addition we will be hosting half a dozen associated trade stands and exhibitors and will be running trains on the newly constructed test track – yes, you heard right, the warehouse elves have been busily constructing a twin gauge running line with 8′ radius curves on which a variety of Accucraft locomotives will be strutting their stuff.  Opening times are 10.30am to 16.00pm and there will be an on site café offering refreshments and light lunches.

Some of the ex-factory stock that will be on offer

Construction of the test track at Unit 4

7/8ths” Scale Decauvilles

Those of you who follow the various online forums or social media will no doubt be aware of an issue that has affected the first tranche of these locos that was delivered to the U.S. – put simply heat was being transferred from the smokebox to the adjacent gas tank and causing the fuel to surge.  Fortunately this problem came to light before the U.K. bound consignment had been uplifted and we were able to discuss a solution with the factory; in consequence all stock purchased from us or our dealers will have been fitted with additional heat insulation in the smokebox and side tank.  However, it is worth observing that these are very small locomotives which lack the ability to absorb and dissipate heat easily and so must NEVER be run on anything but Butane and must be fired with care.  Users must resist the temptation to turn the gas up in order to raise steam quickly, even though most of our other locomotives will tolerate this treatment.  Great care will be needed to avoid over-firing the Decauville.  We apologise for the additional delay in delivering these pretty machines and hope you understand why it was necessary.

Gauge 1, 1:32 scale Mk1 coaches

We have delivered the first batch of these coaches to our dealers and will be getting a few more with the Decauvilles but it is likely that demand will exceed supply.  Unfortunately there was a late surge of orders from our dealers after production had commenced and although we have obtained as much spare stock from the factory and the U.S. as we can there may be orders unfulfilled.  Those who require additional SKs might consider switching  to SOs when they are produced in the autumn.  If demand is sufficient we may be able to run some more BSKs when the SOs and FKs are produced.  The message is clear – get your orders in or miss out!

3rd June 2017 – GIMRA 70th Anniversary Show – The Fosse

Held at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, The Fosse, we will be attending and look forward to seeing you there.  It will be a large event with up to four working layouts including Surrey Oval, Stanley Midland, Dobson Bridge. The Gauge 3 Society will be attending with the Blackgang exhibition track (almost 100′ in length). Tinplate exhibition track, 16mm Association Talks by Surrey Group. Plenty of Trade support. This event will be open to the public.

Accucraft May News

Well, the Peterborough Show didn’t disappoint!  A very well attended exhibition with plenty to see and on offer.  We were delighted to show the Accucraft (US) 7/8ths” Scale Forney and were proud to sponsor the display of the North Bay Works Decauville in its part-finished state.  We also bring you news of Argyle Locomotive Works C38 4-6-2.

SR&RLRR Forney 0-4-4 #6

The Portland Company constructed 0-4-4 Forney #5 in 1891 for the Sandy River Railroad. The locomotive was named “N.B. Neal” and operated this way until 1908 when the Sandy River, Franklin & Megantic, Philips & Rangeley, along with their respective subsidiary railroads merged to form the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes. At this time the loco was renumbered to SR&RL #6. In 1925 the loco was sold to the Kennebec Central, becoming their #4. She was again sold in 1933 to the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington as their #9. After the WW&F railroad was abandoned in 1936-‘37, it was purchased and stored near Putnam, Connecticut.

In December 1994, an agreement was reached with the estate for WW&F #9 and its return to Maine for eventual restoration. Over the course of several years the loco was restored and is now featured in regular excursion over a restored section of the railroad.

Decauville’s small and large!

We were delighted to sponsor the transport of a partly assembled Type 1 Decauville from North Bay Works to accompany the display of the 7/8ths” scale model on our stand.

Accucraft (Aus)  NSWGR C38 in un-streamlined form

Argyle locomotive Works have unveiled the first images of the un-streamlined version of the C38 4-6-2.  The 38 class design was based on a need to eliminate the complications of double heading required on a number of fast interstate passenger trains. The conditions of track work with frequent sharp curvature to be traversed at high speed would require six-coupled driving wheels in a ‘Pacific’ 4-6-2 configuration. Maintenance considerations suggested a two cylinder simple steam locomotive. In May 1939 an order for five 38 class locomotives was placed with Clyde Engineering with a distinctive streamlined boiler casing. The remaining 25 locomotives were built without streamlining at the NSWGR Eveleigh and Cardiff Workshops. From 1961 the locomotives were progressively withdrawn from service. Four have survived into preservation being 3801, 3813, 3820 and 3830.

The model will be available in both Streamlined and Un-streamlined versions and in a variety of liveries and power options. Pilot Model 2016 – you can download the order form here.  Place your reservations with our Hereford office now – prices may be subject to currency revision. With prices ranging from a UK RRP of £3,550.00 (electric) to £3,795.00 (Live Steam) we think they represent outstanding value for money.

Accucraft April News

Spring finally seems to have arrived in Herefordshire and with it the promise of a summer filled with deliveries!  The show season continues with the big one, The National Garden Railway Show, on Saturday 8th April.  As ever we will have one or two surprises on our stand which will also be graced by a Type 1 Decauville, no, not (just) the 1:13.7 Scale Accucraft one but a 12″:1′ scale version from North Bay Works!  We will be expecting the little Decauvilles to arrive in early May and all bar a handful of the first consignment are spoken for.  We very much look forward to seeing you at our stand at Peterborough – don’t miss out on some of the very special deals we are offering on U.S. items for the duration of the show only!

By the late 1800s, France’s Decauville Manufacturing Company had established themselves as builders of reliable and simple to operate narrow gauge steam locomotives. Many of their designs were intended for use in agricultural, mining, and light industrial settings. One such loco was a Decauville Type 1, 3-ton 0-4-0T built in 1899, construction #302, for the Dombe Grande Sugar Estates in what was then the Portuguese territory of Angola. The loco was named Bathala. In 1930, after three decades of dependable operation, Bathala was placed in a museum on the company’s grounds.

In light of the success of our Quarry Hunslet in this scale, used to represent 2′ gauge on 45mm track, we feel that another gauge-adjustable 7/8ths” loco will be well received.  The more generous proportions of models in this scale offer the opportunity to look at prototypes which would be rather too small in 1:19 scale but which we have long hankered after.  The model is gas fired and fitted with a water top up valve, water gauge with blow-down valve, miniature pressure gauge; constructed of stainless steel and etched brass, the loco has an enhanced level of detail made possible by this scale including a reversing lever and brake stand / gas control valve.

Three different colour versions are offered: maroon, green, and black. Each version also features an attractive contrasting colour lining. The UK RRP is £1695.00 including shipping, duty, VAT and UK warranty support. It is exclusively available in the UK from our Herefordshire office.

Specifications:

Scale: 7/8ths” to 1 foot (1:13.7)
Length: 208 mm (8.19 inches)
Width: 110.5 mm (4.35 inches)
Height: 181.6 mm (7.15 inches)
Weight: TBA
Min Radius: 2′ radius
Gauge: Adjustable to either 32 mm or 45mm
Boiler: Centre Flue
Working Pressure: 60 psi
1/2” Pressure Gauge
Water sight glass
Full backhead detail
Slide valve cylinders with fixed cut-off
Full Walschaerts valve gear

Unfortunately due to the ‘Brexit’ effect and the large decrease in the value of Sterling against the US Dollar we have had to review the costs of the above projects and have no alternative but to raise the recommended retail prices. These will be finalised at time of production but we think (assuming Sterling falls no further) they will be in the region of the following: A4 – £3,750; Black 5 – £2,750; and ‘Victory’ – £1275. These prices include VAT.

Please contact the retailer you placed your order with to confirm your order. We will require the confirmed orders by 1st March for ‘Victory’ and the 3rd April for the A4 and Black 5.

Since the A4 and Black 5 both require further re-tooling these models have had to be moved back in the production schedule.  However, this does mean that ‘Victory’, which is fully tooled, will be the next model after the ⅞ths” scale Bagnall to go into production.

Draft Fans

Ideal for those with an alcohol problem (meths-firing that is!), these battery-powered fans induce a draft when lighting up an internally fired locomotive and can be used for most Gauge 1, 1:32 Scale models.  The UK RRP is £85.00 and they are now in stock.
