Accucraft November News

Welcome to the November website bulletin!  We can now bring you up to date with progress on the L&SWR Radial Tank and some J&M coaches to go with it, news of production of the new BR Mk1 RMB, the first images of the new Isle of Man ‘G’ Van and a new locomotive for On3/On30.

L&SWR Adams Radial Tank 4-4-2T

We have been delighted with the level of detail and smooth performance of the new Radial Tank and anticipate delivery of the main batch towards the end of the year.  The factory has done a great job in capturing the Victorian elegance of the prototype with very few compromises to make it easy to operate and maintain.  We are also pleased to announce that we will be able to offer matching L&SWR suburban coaches to accompany the locomotive, hand-assembled from J&M etches with Accucraft roller-bearing bogies, they will be available in simplified L&SWR salmon pink and brown, Southern Railway green, BR green and BR carmine, £650.00 each, they will be offered with a 5% discount for a set of four (two brake thirds, a first/third composite and an all third) or with a 10% discount for those customers who have bought a Radial Tank from us.  Please contact our office to pre-order these coaches and claim your discount!

British Railways Mk1 RMB (Restaurant Miniature Buffet) in 1:32 scale

We have been encouraged by news from the factory that this project has now moved on to tooling with delivery early next year.  The Restaurant Miniature Buffet (or RMB) was a Tourist Standard Open (TSO) coach with two full seating bays next to the centre transverse vestibule removed and replaced with a buffet counter and customers’ standing space, and one bay on one side (same side as the buffet counter) removed and replaced with a store cupboard on the other side of the centre vestibule. They were built in five lots from 1957 to 1962.  Designed to provide catering facilities where a full dining service was not required, they served on all four regions and many have found further use in mainline railtour trains or on preserved lines.

The models feature flushglaze windows, sprung brass buffers, Kadee knuckle couplings throughout, flexible rubber corridor connectors and metal bogies with insulated steel wheels & axles running in roller bearings. Full interior compartment detailing. Unfortunately, due to the fall in the value of Sterling, we have had to increase our UK RRP to £275.00 per coach but in future all will be fitted with Kadee couplers.  We only have a limited stock of the original coaches left so please bear this in mind when ordering the RMB.

Isle of Man Railway ‘G’ Van

For the opening of the Peel Line in 1873, the Isle of Man Railway included in its initial stock purchase from the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co, four hand-braked covered goods vans with load 6 tons and central double-doors to each side. The covered vans were allocated the stock letter ‘G’ when a revised identity system was introduced by the Railway after 1876.  Two additional vans (G.5 & G.6) were supplied new by the Ashbury Carriage & Wagon Co in 1877, a single van (G.7) was believed built by the Railway itself in 1897 using spares and parts supplied by Metropolitan, followed by two further examples (G.8 & G.9) supplied new by Metropolitan in 1899, all to the same basic early-type design. The remaining early-type ‘G’ vans were in use until the 1960’s, but scrapped by 1975 although G.1 survived and has recently been moved for restoration.

The Isle of Man Railway inherited four covered ventilated vans of a different design from the Manx Northern Railway in 1904 and built a further five longer-body examples itself between 1915 and 1921 using  redundant chassis from original 4-wheel carriage stock.  The portholes on the side panels of a number of “G” vans were modifications by the Railway to improve ventilation for carrying perishable goods, live poultry and even horses! We are very pleased to reveal the first images of the initial sample from the factory, paying tribute to the care that has been taken to capture all the small details of the prototype – they are in production now so make sure you have yours pre-ordered with your favoured retailer.

D&RGW ‘Baby Mudhen’ C-25 2-8-0 in On3/On30 scales

This locomotive was originally #103 of the Crystal River Railroad, a narrow gauge line located in the Elk Mountains of central Colorado. It was built in 1903 as C/N 21757 of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, had 33” drivers, 18×20” cylinders, and a tractive effort just short of 25,000 pounds. It was a standard Baldwin design, and other narrow gauge locos of this size and type were built for numerous railroads in the Western Hemisphere.

The D&RG purchased this locomotive from the Crystal River in 1916, numbered it 432, this number subsequently being changed in 1924 to #375. Originally the locomotive was a class 112, this number reflecting the total weight of the locomotive, but eventually the D&RGW changed the classification numbers of their locomotives to reflect their tractive effort, and thus the classification of C-25. Interestingly, for a while the cab of this loco carried ‘C-25-112’ as its classification.

The C-25 was affectionately known as the ‘Baby Mudhen’ because its pulling power was close to that of the K-27 class, those engines being known as ‘Mudhens’. The 375 when it was put into service in 1916 was the best steamer on the railroad at that time. Sadly, on June 21, 1949 the one and only C-25 on the D&RGW was scrapped at Alamosa, Colorado.  The model will carry a UK RRP of £1950.00 and the following versions will be available:

AM58-2103 C-25 #375 Black, Unlettered, On3 Scale
AM58-2113 C-25 #375 Black w/ Flying Rio Grande, On3 Scale
AM58-2123 C-25 #375 Green Boiler w/ Moffat Logo, On3 Scale

AM58-210 C-25 #375 Black, Unlettered, On30 Scale
AM58-211 C-25 #375 Black w/ Flying Rio Grande, On30 Scale
AM58-212 C-25 #375 Green Boiler w/ Moffat Logo, On30 Scale

On3/On30 Jackson & Sharp Combine?

Do you model the US scene in On3 or On30 scale?  Would you be interested in seeing a J&S Combine to accompany the Accucraft coaches you already own?  If so, please let us know because the factory is considering a batch of these useful vehicles.

Accucraft October News

End of Season Sale!  The big news this month is that we are having an end of season clear out of older lines, ‘open box’ items and repaired stock, J&M Coaches make a welcome return, the G1MRA AGM and Show are looming and, after a very long gestation, the 7/8ths” Forney is finally in production!

End of season sale

As the summer draws to a close we like to review some of the ‘end of line’ items we have in stock as well as those which are discounted because they are ‘open box’ items (usually for photographic or show purposes) or because they have been returned to us for repair and thus cannot be sold as ‘new’.  There are some decent bargains among these offerings and most of the locomotives are one-off sales, being the ‘last of the line’.

Accucraft UK appointed J&M distributor

In association with the Accucraft factory, Bram Hengeveld of Exclusive Models is re-introducing the J&M Models brand and we are delighted to say that we have been appointed the UK agent. For those who may be unfamiliar with this range, J&M Models have, in the past, produced some of the most outstanding etched brass, 1:32 scale coaches, modelled on both British and European prototypes.  Initially there will be a small batch of Compagnie International de Wagons-Lits (CIWL) LX sleeping cars, bearing four different running numbers appropriate to the ‘Blue Train’; in the coming year all the different vehicles that made up the this iconic express train will be announced and produced.  These beautiful coaches will represent a second generation of J&M production with the use of improved materials, more detail but less weight than the originals. The axles will run in roller-bearings and the factory is working hard to produce an initial sample for the G1MRA AGM.  Exact specifications and prices will be available shortly.

G1MRA AGM and Show – 12th October, Stoneleigh

In many ways it has been a tumultuous year for our involvement in Gauge 1, bringing as it has the announcement of our new Radial Tank, delivery of the Aster-Accucraft 5MTs and Light and Heavy USRA Mikados, our appointment as the sole UK agent for the Aster range of locomotives and the consequent revelation that we will be producing not one, but two, new LNER locomotives under that banner in the next year.  Accucraft UK is now the premier supplier of 1:32 scale locomotives and rolling stock in the UK, incorporating the Accucraft US, AUS and DE ranges (and now J&M coaches) in the broad range of products we can now offer our customers.  For the Gauge 1 Model Railway Association, the focus of the year is the annual AGM and Show, held this time at the comfortably central location of the National Agricultural Showground at Stoneleigh Park.  We will be there and look forward to seeing you, showing you our new products and discussing your Gauge 1 requirements.

7/8ths” Forney 0-4-4 now in production

The Portland Company constructed 0-4-4 Forney #5 in 1891 for the Sandy River Railroad. The locomotive was named “N.B. Neal” and operated this way until 1908 when the Sandy River, Franklin & Megantic, Philips & Rangeley, along with their respective subsidiary railroads merged to form the Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes. At this time the loco was renumbered to SR&RL #6. In 1925 the loco was sold to the Kennebec Central, becoming their #4. She was again sold in 1933 to the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington as their #9. After the WW&F railroad was abandoned in 1936-‘37, it was purchased and stored near Putnam, Connecticut.

In December 1994, an agreement was reached with the estate for WW&F #9 and its return to Maine for eventual restoration. Over the course of several years the loco was restored and is now featured in regular excursion over a restored section of the railroad.

Accucraft September News

It was a hectic start to the month with the Llanfair Garden Railway Show, where it was great to see so many of you; the two new generic locomotives, Talgarth and Sabrina were very well received (see the forthcoming review in Garden Rail magazine) and it was surprising how many ‘Gauge Oners’ came out of the woodwork to view the expanded range of 1:32 items on display.  This month we bring you further news about Dolgoch, changes in the UK distribution of the Aster-Accucraft range and an early ‘heads up’ for the G1MRA AGM and show at Stoneleigh.

Dolgoch was here!  First batch now sold out…

We are pleased to say that our batch of Talyllyn Railway Dolgochs have completely sold out here.  However, all is not lost since we have a further batch under construction at the factory and even better, we will be producing a very limited number in the Indian Red livery – make sure you reserve one with your preferred dealer!  Due to the recent slide in the value of Sterling these final examples will now carry a UK RRP of £1595.00. The locomotive will be followed by Talyllyn Railway No.1 Talyllyn early next year so make sure you have reserved one of those as well!  Suitable rolling stock kits are available from I P Engineering.

Versions available, limited final production:

S19-32A  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 32mm Gauge – TR Green
S19-32B  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 32mm Gauge – Atlas Green
S19-32C  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 32mm Gauge – TR Red
S19-32D  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 32mm Gauge – Indian Red
S19-33A  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 45mm Gauge – TR Green
S19-33B  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 45mm Gauge – Atlas Green

S19-33D  Dolgoch 0-4-0T Live Steam, 45mm Gauge – Indian Red

The distribution of Aster-Accucraft products in the UK

Due to changes within the Gauge 1 market, we are pleased to say that Accucraft UK is now the sole UK agent for Aster-Accucraft products and we will be introducing a range of new products in the forthcoming months.  Existing Aster buyers are not forgotten and we will continue to supply spare parts for older Aster locomotives (if they are still available) from the inventory in Japan – our existing customers will attest to the fact that we have been providing this service since we were appointed Aster-Accucraft dealers.  There has been some suggestion that the 5MT kits may not be up to snuff but as far as we know all those we have supplied have gone together without too much trouble – as ever, the models are covered by our two year warranty and an Accucraft boiler certificate.  Although we are currently out of stock of RTR 5MTs we can have one built up by one of our experienced Aster builders in a fairly short time, customised to your specification.  Our time-served Aster repair agents are on hand if anyone needs any help!  Remember that both the Light and Heavy Mikados are still available in kit and RTR form and we can supply a broad range of 1:32 scale US rolling stock to enhance them!

A train for Kathleen!

Following discussions at the Llanfair show we are delighted to say that Ivan Prior will be producing a range of Cavan & Leitrim rolling stock to accompany our new 1:20.3 scale 4-4-0T.  The C&L had an interesting collection of vehicles, ranging from some very fine clerestory coaches to an attractive ‘birdcage’ four-wheel brake.  More details of these kits from IP Engineering will be released in due course and they should also be available in built-up form. Our model of Kathleen is internally gas fired and has piston valve cylinders. The boiler is fitted with a water gauge and a water top-up valve is supplied, the lubricator needs to be emptied with a syringe, there being no room for a blow down valve, the gas filler valve is under one of the water tank filler, the gas control valve is disguised as the brake standard and the cab controls are accessible via the hinged cab roof. Nameplates are provided for both Kathleen and Lady Edith but these are not fitted, allowing customers to choose another member of the class if they so wish. The target UK RRP is £1950.00. You can find full details and specification here.

Versions available subject to production batch:

S20-10A – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 2 Kathleen – lined green
S20-10B – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 2L Kathleen – GSR grey
S20-10C – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 2L Kathleen – plain black
S20-10D – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 3 Lady Edith – lined green
S20-10E – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 3L Lady Edith – GSR grey
S20-10F – CAVAN & LEITRIM 4-4-0T No. 3L Lady Edith – plain black

A new ‘Pairs’ coach for the Isle of Man!

With stock of the Isle of Man ‘pairs’ coaches running low we thought we’d have one last throw of the dice with a ‘might have been’ coach, a half brake made up of an ‘E’ Van and a four-wheel coach in the same manner in which the ‘pairs’ coaches were assembled, albeit allowing for the slightly different design of panels on the ‘E’ Van.  Although it is a freelance design we think the end result is most attractive and will go well with an existing rake of the ‘pairs’ coaches, the UK RRP will be £175.00 (part number R19-26) and the next batch of four-wheelers and ‘E’ Vans will carry an RRP of £90.00.

G1MRA AGM and Show at Stoneleigh

12th October 2019 GIMRA Trade Show and AGM at Stoneleigh – We look forward to seeing you at this year’s Gauge One Model Railway Association Show which being held at the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre Stoneleigh Park, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, CV8 2LZ.  We will have a packed stand and many new items so please drop by and say ‘hello’!

Accucraft August News

Welcome to our August news update.  There has been so much going on it’s hard to know where to start!  The big story is the announcement of our next 1:20.3 scale locomotive, a Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0T as well as news of our generic 1:19 scale tank engines, Talgarth & Sabrina, the delivery of Dolgoch and a reminder about Llanfair Garden Railway show at the end of the month.

Kathleen and Lady Edith – Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0Ts in 1:20.3 scale

As previously announced, having produced hundreds of Isle of Man locomotives in various guises we have decided to shift our focus for 3′ gauge locomotives to the Emerald Isle and start working our way through some of the gorgeous Irish prototypes, starting with the elegant Cavan & Leitrim 4-4-0 tank locomotives.

We have chosen to model the two surviving locomotives in their final form, No. 2 Kathleen in ‘tram’ condition with the extended cab roof and tram style cab (albeit without full skirts) and No. 3 Lady Edith in ‘main line’ form without these additions. In due course all eight locomotives were re-boilered, increasing their working weight from 25 to 27 long tons and numerous rebuilds saw components exchanged between individuals. At the 1925 amalgamation the C&LR became part of the Great Southern Railway; in due course the eight locomotives lost their original green livery for GSR grey and later black. We’d like to thank our friends at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and the Cavan & Leitrim Railway Preservation Society at Dromod for their help in gathering data for David Fletcher’s superb drawings. The model is internally gas fired and has piston valve cylinders.

Talgarth and Sabrina are coming!

Our two new generic locomotives for 16mm scale are now in production and we are delighted to be able to bring you images of the two sample models we have been sent – these will be on display on our stand at the forthcoming Llanfair Garden Railway Show.  Unfortunately, due to the slide in the value of Sterling, we have been forced to increase the UK RRP of these locomotives to £1050.00 for pre-shipment orders, thereafter the price will increase to a new UK RRP of £1095.00 (£925.00 and £950.00 for the power unit) – however, we still regard them as outstanding value for money, having the sophistication of slide vales and simplified Walschaerts valve gear as well as a water gauge fitted as standard and the samples run like clockwork!

Dolgoch is here!

We are pleased to say that our batch of Talyllyn Railway Dolgochs have arrived safely and have already been sent out to dealers.  The models have exceeded our expectations and set news standards for small narrow gauge locomotives in this scale – we have very few left available so make sure you don’t miss out, thereafter they will only be available via our friends in California for the increased price of £1650.00.  The locomotive will be followed by Talyllyn Railway No.1 Talyllyn early next year so make sure you have reserved one of those as well!  Suitable rolling stock kits are available from I P Engineering.

Llanfair Garden Railway Show

We will be attending the Llanfair Garden Railway Show as usual, the dates are Saturday 31st August & Sunday 1st September (in association with the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway Steam Gala) at Llanfair Caereinion Leisure Centre, High School, Llanfair Caereinion, SY21 0HW.

Accucraft June News

With just a week to go until our Open Day and sale, tidying the warehouse has turned up a few more treasures so be sure not to miss out on these bargains!  We also bring you news of a new Isle of Man ‘pairs’ coach, an update on the rapid sale of the Talyllyn locomotives, some images from the factory and a revised list of goodies from the Accucraft eStore ‘specials’ page.

Accucraft’s 2019 open day – Saturday 8th June

The format will be much the same as previous open days, once again at Unit 4, Long Meadow Industrial Estate. We will have factory seconds, damaged items and test samples to sell as well as many ‘end of line’ items. This stock will be offered for sale on a ‘first come, first served’ basis without prior reservation and will include ‘open box’ locomotives, rolling stock and track components as well as sundry ‘kits of parts’ with potential for re-assembly!  As they say, “everything must go!”.  This year there will be a particular emphasis on 1:32 scale products.

We will be supported by associated traders and stands including Chuffed 2 Bits, Swift Sixteen and Black Cat Bridges.  We will be running Accucraft locomotives in 1:13.7, 1:19, 1:20.3 and 1:32 scales.  Opening times are 10:30hrs to 16:00hrs and there will be an on site café offering refreshments and light lunches.

Here’s a little taster of some of the stock which we will be offering as ‘open box’ or sale items, as well as new releases on show.

Talyllyn locomotives selling fast!

With the majority of the initial batch of Dolgochs pre-sold and production well under way it looks as though we will have to produce No. 1 Talyllyn as soon as possible! Pre-orders for the latter are already healthy and we thank our customers for their faith in us to deliver these attractive locomotives.  If you haven’t pre-ordered Dolgoch already you may have to wait for a second run which will, alas, inevitably be more expensive!

In 2013 we were approached to produce all the Talyllyn Railway locomotives as a commission and although this never came to fruition we had worked up the concepts and designs with a view to producing them of our own accord.  Due to developments within the trade we have decided that, rather than waste all this effort, we would bring the first of these, Dolgoch, to the market in 2019.  Once this has been delivered we will work on TR No. 1, Talyllyn, with a view to delivering the model in early 2020 with a target price of £1650.00 for Talyllyn (inclusive of VAT and UK warranty, subject to the usual currency caveats).  You can find full details of Talyllyn here.  We would like to thank David Fletcher for the superb drawings and members of the Talyllyn Railway for their help in providing data for the model of No. 1.

The model is built to a scale of 16mm:1′ (1:19 scale) and follows our standard design brief being internally gas-fired with a centre flue boiler. The model will not be gauge adjustable but will be available in either 32mm (‘O’ gauge) or 45mm (‘1′ gauge) and will not have insulated wheels. The axles run in bronze bearings and all the rods and valve gear (piston reverse) will be manufactured from stainless steel.  The cab roof is fixed, access to the regulator and reverser is via the cab doors, water via the boiler filler cap, gas via the toolbox and the lubricator filler is in one of the bunkers. The copper boiler is fitted with a gauge glass.  The model is built from stainless steel and brass. Although fitted with TR buffers and couplings the model will be supplied with a pair of adapters for our Z1/Z2 chopper couplings for those who wish to use them. The model will be available in TR green, Indian Red or black.

Versions available, subject to production batch:

S19-34A ‘Talyllyn’ 0-4-2ST Live Steam, 32mm gauge – TR Green
S19-32B ‘Talyllyn’ 0-4-2ST Live Steam, 32mm gauge – Indian Red

Factory visit – May 2019

A recent trip to the factory found ‘Wrens’ under construction, Howard vans being moulded and painted and numerous other projects being progressed.  Graham Langer was accompanied by Bram Hengeveld of Exclusive Models (Netherlands), both of them there to discuss future models such as the new ‘pairs’ coach.

Bram demonstrates the size of some of the plastic injection tools – solid steel!

Accucraft May News

Welcome to our the May edition of our online bulletin.  This month we bring you advice about recent deliveries and details of those new products announced at Peterborough.  Please note that the office will be closed from 27th April until 7th May for a factory visit.  Don’t forget our open day on 8th June – there will be some unmissable bargains to be had!

Dolgoch – now in production!

We were delighted to be able to show a production sample of the new 1:19 scale model of Dolgoch at Peterborough (our thanks to Channing Cheng for hand-carrying it from the factory!) and have now finalised numbers for production; it is likely to be a ‘one-time’ batch and if you haven’t pre-ordered one you would be well advised to do so – at the current rate we do not anticipate having much free stock available when the batch is delivered.  You can find full details of this lovely 0-4-0T here.  Delivery expected in July.

Early announcements for 2020!

Also at the National Garden Railway Show we revealed plans for two new 1:19 scale locomotives for production in 2020.  In 2013 we were approached to produce all the Talyllyn Railway locomotives as a commission and although this never came to fruition we had worked up the concepts and designs with a view to producing them of our own accord.  Due to developments within the trade we have decided that, rather than waste all this effort, we would bring the first of these, Dolgoch, to the market in 2019 and will swiftly follow this up with Talyllyn in early 2020. In addition to the TR 0-4-2ST we also aim to produce a limited run of the attractive Falcon Works ‘Lawley’ 4-4-0 produced for the Beira Railway and inherited by SAR.  Target prices are £1650.00 for Talyllyn, £2950.00 for the Lawley (inclusive of VAT and UK warranty, subject to the usual currency caveats).  You can find full details of Talyllyn here and the Lawley here.  We would like to thank David Fletcher for the superb drawings and members of the Talyllyn Railway for their help in providing data for the model of No. 1.

Accucraft April News

Welcome to our April bulletin. This month we bring you further images of the Adams Radial Tank, our 2019 open day, an announcement at the National Garden Railway Show and some discontinued UK stock still available from California.

1:32 Scale Adams Radial Tank for 2019

This will be the first Accucraft model to benefit from assembly in Japan, bringing improved build quality and finish as well as giving us the option to offer the model in kit form, a first for Accucraft UK!.  Launched to coincide with the Bluebell Railway’s ‘Branch Line Weekend’ debut of No. 30583 in late BR black, we are sure that almost everyone with a Gauge 1 layout will find an excuse to have one of these delightful locomotives.

With London suburban services in mind, William Adams’ 415 Class was based on his earlier LSWR 46 Class, with a trailing radial axle added to support an enlarged coal bunker. Coupled to a short wheelbase and guiding bogie, the locomotive could accommodate tight curves, a feature that was to ensure the survival of some of the class later on. The 0415’s tenure on the London suburban services was relatively short-lived and with the introduction of Drummond’s M7 class 0-4-4 tanks and the class was generally removed to rural branch duties from 1895. In 1903 the link was made between the class and the severely curved Lyme Regis branch where the ‘Radials’ proved to be highly suited to that line. Two were allocated to Exmouth Junction shed, joined in 1946 by a third example retrieved from the East Kent Railway. They continued on the Lyme Regis branch after Nationalisation but the end finally came in 1961. However the final example, No. 30583, was purchased by the Bluebell Railway and preserved.

The model is 1:32 scale for 45mm gauge track, gas-fired with a single flue boiler. The chassis is constructed from stainless steel, the wheels are uninsulated. The boiler is copper, the cab and bodywork are constructed from etched brass. The model will run round 4′ 6″ radius curves (TBC). The East Kent Railway version is only available from Kent Garden Railways.
